A Life Lesson - 11+ Powerful Strategies

A LIFE LESSON

We all have different forms of procrastinating and coping with the daily stress of school. One of my favorite ways to calm down is to listen to the wisdom of public speakers. They can cover anything stress to science and even love. Here are a few life lessons that will inspire you.

A Life Lesson

Stress Can Be Your Friend:-

It can be so tricky at times to focus or remember to breathe when you feel like a tsunami of fear is drowning you. Kelly McGonigal speaks about how you can make stress your friend, and as crazy as that statement sounds, it made me feel so much better. She discusses the spike in energy and determination to finish a project that stress gives you. She also goes into the fact that most people are more impaired by worrying about stress then stress itself. Ultimately, stress can be a good thing, so don’t fret if you feel the pressure, try and use it as fuel and determination to achieve your goals. The kick of energy that comes with stress can be just what you need.

People Are Different:-

It may sound obvious, but people are genuinely distinct. This concept made sense to me through a lesson by Lynne Franklin, who describes people through their body language in three ways: the looker, the listener and the feeler. Although three categories can’t just separate people, this talk gives you a gauge on how behaviors can be misinterpreted by people who think differently than the person they are observing. A “looker” may be offended by a listener who is not making eye contact while they are speaking, while in reality, it’s not that the listener is uninterested; they are just really listening. Little body language tricks that other people do during conversations can leave us offended if we don’t think the same way. But don’t be offended if the next person you greet is not a hugger like you or bad at keeping eye contact, as they may be different from you. It’s not personal, its just different behavioral traits.

You Need To Love Yourself To Love Other:-

A running theme I have found in many motivational speakers is the straightforward and challenging task of loving ourselves. Although it sounds obvious, it can be a tough process that takes time. Loving yourself is a constant battle that’s faced daily, weekly and yearly. It doesn’t just mean loving parts of yourself, and it’s natural to be self-critical, but start by focusing on the positive. Look in the mirror every morning and compliment one thing you love about yourself. It sounds silly, but it works! Your confidence and happiness will rise and spill onto others in the best way. So shut off your social media apps, look in the mirror and compliment yourself. You deserve happiness, and it deserves you.

How To Get Motivated:-

A Lesson by Mel Robbins hit home for me and encouraged me to get off my butt and get stuff done. She explains how the chance you were born is one in a billion, so we’re already pretty freaking special by living today. She continues by describing how people keep screwing themselves over by being comfortable. Her blunt honesty throughout the talk is the recipe you may need for motivation. Try setting a couple of goals for yourself each week and wake up 20 minutes earlier each day to work toward accomplishing them. Even if you don’t make your goal, the progress you’ll make is astounding.

There is also a lot to be learned by stepping outside of your comfort zone. Although it’s scary, and quite frankly just uncomfortable, it’s how we learn and grow as humans. So if you’re afraid of public speaking, sign yourself up and give a speech, or if you’re scared of dancing, wake up an hour earlier and take a dance class. You may not be the next Julianne Hough or a jazz expert, but you’ll gain a little rhythm and face your fears.

POWERFUL STRATEGY WHEN FACING LIFE'S PROBLEMS:-

For many of us, these are challenging times in our own lives and in our world.

When you’re confronted with life’s challenges, limitations, and complexities, do you see yourself as isolated or as part of a larger whole? Do you experience occasional glimpses of unity under all the complexities and noise?

As we live our lives, accumulating experiences and wisdom, we may occasionally sense that there’s more beyond what we comprehend with our rational minds. We may glimpse deeper concordance within the mysteries of life or a larger vision of the universe and our place in it.

This sense of oneness may be discovered in the beauty of the outdoors, a quiet presence in a moment of pause, deep listening, acts of kindness, and caring relationships. Perhaps one experiences an aspect of life that extends beyond the individual, interconnecting us to all others and the wholeness of the universe. According to positive psychologist Barbara Fredrickson (2013), micro-moments of love and other positive emotions can change our biochemistry, expanding our sense of connection with others and within ourselves.

Perhaps you can relate to this experience,  occasionally sensing that life’s synchronicities may be more than coincidences, losing yourself in the awe of nature, or noticing an inkling of “more” from the depth of your being.

Some of us may experience a deeper linkage among human beings as we feel compelled to serve a greater good for reasons beyond our own needs. We may recognize the importance of caring for other people and the earth, or are drawn toward taking action for social justice. Others may seek meaning in life’s seemingly random occurrences as we awaken to the bigger picture of things.

We live in a world charged with meaning. Perhaps you’ve heard the expression “humans are meaning-making machines.” I’m not sure where this expression began. It recognizes that we have experiences and our minds try to understand them. From a psychological perspective we know that meanings enable us to make sense of the world around us, influencing our emotions and ideas. We can engage meanings and our interpretations to guide our intentions, decisions, and actions.

A Life Lesson

Do you sometimes, even for fleeting moments - sense a hidden unity underneath the multiplicities of everyday life?

Whether you see yourself as seeking greater meaning in life, appreciating the beauty and wonder of nature, or experiencing a deep sense of spirituality, you may ponder how to connect more frequently with inspiration, your own inner knowing, or the underlying oneness of us all.

Contemplative practices create space to open to life’s meanings and possibilities. Journaling, yoga, qigong, meditation, prayer, peaceful time in nature, listening deeply, and interacting mindfully with another person can be experiences not only for contemplation, but for boosting our well-being, physical/emotional health, and becoming more fully present in our daily lives. These activities can help us slow our minds and open to calmer, quieter places within. Sometimes these practices may help us awaken to doorways of transcendence within and outside of ourselves, perhaps resonating with a greater sense of peace, balance, or unity.

Journaling is an easy and powerful way to support your journey in life, helping you become aware of your thoughts and getting them out of your head into the light of day. In a practical realm, journaling can help you gain awareness and insights, set intentions and goals, and work through challenges and obstacles. In a contemplative realm, journaling can help you open to life’s questions, mysteries, and wonderments.
A Life Lesson

If you’d like to take action to journal, here’s a simple strategy-

Take two to fifteen minutes each day this week to jot down a few words, phrases, or paragraphs about whatever comes to mind. Remember there’s not a right way to journal – it’s not something you should know how to do. Just take a few moments to write about anything you’re thinking about or whatever is impacting you.

"Slow down, Breathe, Notice what’s going on within and around you, Jot it down."
