What is Type 1 Diabetes

10% of diabetes patients have type 1 diabetes and in the UK 8% of diabetes patients have type 1 diabetes. It's got nothing to do with diet or lifestyle, it just happens when you have type 1 diabetes. your body kicks the insulin-producing cells in your 'Pancreas', so you can't produce any insulin at all and we all need insulin to live. It does an essential job, it allows the glucose in our blood to enter in cells and fuel our bodies when you have type 1 diabetes.

‣ Your body still breaks down the carbohydrate from food and drink and turns it into glucose, but when the glucose enters your bloodstream; there's no insulin to allow it into your body cells, more and more glucose then builds up in your bloodstream. So what does this mean; well before diagnosis your body tries to get rid of the glucose through your kidneys, and that makes you a lot wiing so much leads to another symptom of diabetes;
Extreme thirst because glucose can't enter your cells to give you energy, you'll feel incredibly tired to try and get energy.
The body breaks down fat stores to provide the fuel that's why people often 'Lose Weight' before realizing they've got type 1 diabetes. These symptoms tend to come on quickly over only a few days or weeks.
Type 1 Diabetes: Symptoms, Causes, Prevention and Treatment
‣ Anyone who has these symptoms should see a doctor as soon as possible if you've got type 1 diabetes you get insulin into your body by injecting it or using a pump which delivers a constant supply into you. You'll also need to check that your blood glucose levels are not too low & too high by using a 'Blood-Glucose Testing Device'. Several times a day when you start taking insulin, you'll enter to feel better and your blood glucose levels will go down, this is important because over a long period high-glucose levels in your blood can seriously damage your heart, eyes, feet, and kidneys. these are known as the complications of diabetes but with the right treatment and care about the long-term effects of diabetes and high glucose levels can be managed.

If your high blood sugar level isn't treated; life-threatening complications can result, for example, you can become early ill with a condition called 'Diabetic Ketoacidosis'. It's more common in people with type 1 diabetes here's how it happens;
You have little or no insulin in your blood & your cells can't get the sugar they need for energy, as a result, your body turns to fats and proteins, for energy your body breaks down the fats certain substances known as ketone bodies build up in your blood, this results in a condition called ketosis.

If ketones build-up to dangerously high levels in your blood & you may develop 'Diabetic Ketoacidosis or DKA' this may result in coma or death. If your blood sugar level drops too low you may experience a serious complication of diabetes called 'Hypoglycemia', a common way this can happen is by taking too much diabetic medication or not eating too much insulin or oral diabetic medication can cause too much sugar to go into your cells then your blood sugar level drops down too low.

Certain organs such as the brain need a regular energy supply to work properly because the brain's main source of energy is sugar, it's the first organ affected by lower sugar levels when your brain cells called 'Neurons' don't get enough sugar they begin to malfunction.

Symptoms Such As:
• Nervousness
• Shakiness

Possible Causes

• Genetics
• Exposure to Viruses
• Environmental Factors

Diagnosis For Type 1 Diabetes

• Random Blood Sugar Test

Treatment for Type 1 Diabetes

• Your goal is to keep your blood glucose or sugar within a normal range, your doctor may suggest a combination of 'Insulin Therapy', other medicines checking your blood sugar. Eating a healthy diet & getting regular exercise because your pancreas doesn't make enough for any insulin. You will need to take insulin, it will replace what your body should be making, an expert can train you to inject the insulin under the skin. You may need to give yourself injections several times each day and you will need to rotate between injection sites, this helps avoid damage to your tissues & helps make sure you get the best outcomes from your insulin.

• Another way to get insulin is through an 'Insulin Pump', the pump is attached to your body and sends insulin through a tube that is just under your skin. your pancreas may not be making enough of a chemical called 'Amylin', normally amylin helps control your blood sugar level by reducing the amount of sugar. Your liver makes during a meal it also slows the movement of food throughout your stomach so your body doesn't take it in as fast. If your body isn't making enough amylin, there are medicines to replace it how much medication you need will depend on the level of sugar in your blood.

‣ You will need to check the level of sugar in your blood with a 'Glucometer'. Ask your doctor how often to check to do this, you will prick your finger with a small needle called a 'Lancet', then you will put a drop of blood in the glucometer, your glucometer knowing your blood sugar level allows you to adjust your insulin dose, the calories you eat during meals and physical activity as directed by your health care provider.
‣ Your treatment plan includes eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise, they will help you manage your sugar level and may help reduce your risk of complications from type 1 diabetes.
It is important to take your medications as directed by your doctor, do not go off your medication unless your doctor tells you to do so tell him or her about any side effects you may have.
